💬 What mantra lifts your spirits when you're in a slump?

Earlier this week I dropped into the Strategic Pivoting class at Stanford GSB as a guest lecturer—with enormous thanks to professor Allison Kluger who built the syllabus around my second book, Pivot.
Pre-pandemic I would attend one or two sessions in person, but now I zoom in for twenty-five minutes as a giant head floating on screens at the front of the classroom. I shudder to think at what the students see when my face is blown up to that size.
Before my rambling portion (I am rustier than ever), Allison told a story about grieving losses as we move through life, even for happy occasions like getting married or becoming a parent.
In those moments, she reminds herself: been there, done that. It acknowledges the grief of losing our ghost self, while also opening up to the personal growth that follows.1
Upon hearing those words, it hit me just how much ambiguous loss I am working through after so much corporate work vanished these last few years, even if I know I am evolving toward something new.2 I felt relief, even just for a moment.
Maybe I’ve been there, done that, and my soul and business are ready to experience something new. Clearly they are, or I wouldn’t be rolling in so much damn ‘doh. On Wednesday, I also shared my one wish for moving forward—there’s only ever one wish.3
I would love to hear from you: What mantra or reminder lifts you up when you’re in a life or business slump?
