“And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud
was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.”
—Possibly misattributed to Anaïs Nin, but really by Elizabeth Appell?
Sometimes despite our best efforts to return to normal—the way things were—we realize in bewilderment that the old ways of doing things have stopped working altogether. There is no going back. There is only forward, and all forks in the potential paths ahead include varying degrees of risk.
In Chapter 10 of Free Time on Inviting Nonlinear Breakthroughs, I share my friend Christine Arylo’s advice to transcend the mind’s tug-of-war between two seemingly poor choices with sacred third solutions:1
The sacred third is not about merely considering a third option, as that further activates the intellect. In contrast, “The sacred third is about moving toward wholeness,” Christine says. “By framing the conundrum as an inquiry, you activate intuition, imagination, and contemplation.”
During a big transition in her life, she realized that the way she had been asking, “Where should I live?” was making her anxious. Her mind was running in circles through yes/no, either/or scenarios such as, Should we stay in Seattle? Or should we move to North Carolina? Or go somewhere else?
So Christine shifted toward a more expansive inquiry instead: “Show me where [my partner] Noah and I can root so we can both thrive. Where will we prosper?”
In the first version, her mind was tirelessly searching for answers. With her updated inquiry, Christine was able to get quiet, allowing her curiosity and intuition to lead her toward more resonant solutions.
There’s a reason books like 10X is Easier than 2X exist—sometimes delulu is the solulu because it gets us thinking more expansively.
Sometimes what seems delulu to outsiders is what’s actually most true for our inner guidance system—an even more sacred, intuitive solution.
To build on our recent three part series . . .2
I would love to hear from you: What is one seemingly delulu but true-to-you risk that you’ve taken recently?
